For a long time, I did not change up my Christmas decor too much from year to year. Mostly because of the cost involved in having lots of different Christmas decorations, but also for the ease of it. Now as a blogger, I kinda have to change up my decor or it would get really boring for you guys to see the same tree every year. Ha! Luckily over time, I have picked up on some great tips to save money on Christmas tree decor. I will be sharing those tips with you today. π
My trees of Christmas past were mostly decorated with lots of red. Of course red is the quintessential color choice for Christmas anyway so that always worked out great. However, I got a little tired of red and wanted to branch out to other colors. One year the day after Christmas, I bought a fully decorated tree from Menards at a heck of a discount! It had ornaments, ribbon, lights and more included and it was decorated with colors of bronzes, coppers and golds. It was gorgeous! In fact, the ribbon on this tree and the blush and copper swirled ornament pictured below came from that tree.
So that would be my first tip, look for fully decorated trees at discounts. You could literally save hundreds of dollars that way. I think I paid about $150 for everything, tree and all the decorations! Of course, the second obvious tip is to buy Christmas decorations after Christmas each year. You can get them at such a discount. Plan ahead what colors you want to use for next year’s Christmas. I know some people don’t like to plan ahead, but if you want to save money, this is the best way to do it!
I also know it is not always easy to spend money after Christmas since you just paid out a ton for Christmas gifts. But just to give you an idea, I got so many decorations this past year at Hobby Lobby when they had everything 80% off and spent about $40!! That’s it! Most of the ornaments you see on this tree were bought then as well as the big disco ball ornament. π I also got some gold ribbon that I did not even use. The ornament sets that I got came with pretty blue ornaments too that I used this year on my front porch. You can see them on my finger knitted wreath I have hanging on the front door.
I also was able to buy some BIG ornaments that I would have not spent the money on otherwise. I really think the different sized ornaments add a lot of dimension to the tree.
Another tip I have is to stock up on a lot of decorations that are neutral colors like silver and gold. Those can be used every year with all of your color combinations and are great to use as filler on your tree. They can also be used in vignettes around your house.
One more tip is to DIY your ornaments. There are so many great tutorials out there on Pinterest and we even shared some earlier in our 12 days of Christmas blog hop. So you already saw these DIY wooden bead feather ornaments that I made this year. They were really easy and inexpensive to make. Don’t they look lovely on the tree?
I love how they tie into the wooden bead garland on the mantel and they go so well with the fake “snow” on the tree. Check our my Christmas tree from last year to see the details on the snow. π
Another way you can save money is to flock your own tree. I had wanted a flocked tree for a long time but did not want to spend the money on it as we already had a couple perfectly good Christmas trees already. So last year I decided to DIY it. It turned out great! I was pleasantly surprised this year when I pulled it out of the box to see how it fared. There was some flocking that had come off but overall it still was covered well. I didn’t even have to add more flocking this year. Next year, I want to add more to make the flock heavier though.
I found some cute coordinating wrapping paper at Target this year. I made up these free printableΒ simple hand embroidered gift tags to dress up the presents even more. They were very easy to make and you can make them in any color!
I also did something new this year when hanging my ornaments and really like how they turned out. I grouped the ornaments in clumps of twos and threes instead of hanging them all singly. This helps to make the tree look more full. I found some bigger hooks at Hobby Lobby so I was able to hang a couple ornaments on the same hook. These were also gotten for 80% off. π
I really love how the tree coordinates with my white village Christmas mantel this year. The big rose gold star matches perfectly with some of the ornaments. Everything looks so pretty, it just makes me smile every time I walk into the room. Isn’t that why we decorate after all? To make us happy? π
I hope you like my Christmas tree this year as much as I do. It will be up for a little while even after Christmas. We usually leave our Christmas decor up through New Year’s Day and even a little longer. It always seems like a lot of work to decorate for only one month! Plus I miss the twinkling lights. Do you usually take your tree down right away? I will be back on Wednesday with a sweet treat to share with you. See you then!

Wow! Thank you so much Marie!! You are so sweet! I know what you mean about the red, it took me a while to go away from it too! π
This is amazing! Even your wrapping paper matches! The blush and rose gold looks stunning and I will be honest I’m not a fan of gold, but together it just fits so well. Gorgeous!
Thanks so much Jenny!! I started matching my wrapping paper to my tree a couple years ago and I love doing it! It makes everything look so cohesive. I won’t go back. Ha!
Absolutely gorgeous! Wish I could see it in person because I can just bet that even those beautiful photos don’t really do it justice. Love it!
Thanks Susan! You are right, pictures never do things justice. It is definitely my favorite tree! π
