Boho Bunny Wreath

by Kimberly 10 Comments

Transform a dollar tree bunny form into this gorgeous boho bunny wreath. Leave plain for a simple look or adorn it with flowers and greenery.

I am so excited to share this fun and easy Easter craft with you today! I am sure you will love it, I certainly do! Not to pat myself on the back, but this boho bunny wreath turned out absolutely stunning. Can you believe this started from a bunny wreath form from the Dollar Tree?

You may have seen these Dollar Tree Easter wreath forms before, I have definitely seen tutorials for them on Pinterest and YouTube. When I saw them in the Dollar Tree, I decided to get one and see what I could do with it. Most of the tutorials I have seen wrapped them in yarn, which are also really cute, but I wanted to try something different.

DIY Easter bunny wreath

Macrame bunny wreath

I saw one that had macrame cord wrapped around it and that inspired me to do a boho version. I made a boho raffia wall hanging a couple years ago and this is made in a similar fashion. Of course, I am partial to boho style but even if I wasn’t, this boho bunny wreath looks so chic and fun that it would fit in with lots of different decor styles.

I love the way the frayed edges of the macrame cord looks like fur. It is like this bunny has such a plump, furry face. LOL Just look at the ears, don’t they look like furry ears?

Decorate your Boho bunny wreath how you want

I chose to decorate my wreath with some greenery and a flower. I also added some felt to line the ears but that is all optional. If you like a simpler look, you can go forego the felt ears and just use some flowers like this.

Or if you want a really simple look, just leave your boho bunny wreath unadorned like this.

The nice thing is you can switch it up each year if you want. How can you do that, do you ask? Did you happen to catch my wreath accessories post? If not, you should totally check it out! However, I used the same concept with my bunny accents. I made them removeable! That way I can use this boho Easter wreath in the future and adorn it in a different way. 😉 Stay tuned and I will show you how to do that later in this post.

Don’t want to read all the instructions? I have included a video in this post showing you how to make this boho bunny wreath. If you can’t see the video, turn off your ad blocker. • Bunny head wreath form – I found mine at the Dollar Tree which is preferable, but if you can’t find it or live far away, this is an alternative.
  • Macrame cord (4mm)
  • Scissors
  • Pink felt (optional)
  • Greenery/flowers (optional)

Cut some lengths of macrame cord

The first step is to cut some lengths of your macrame cord. I cut strips to approximately 5 inches each. I don’t know how many strips it took to make the wreath, but just cut a bunch and cut more if you need more later. 🙂 To do this as efficiently as possible, I cut multiple strips at the same time. You do not have to be exact with the measurements since this is a boho look anyway.

Cut five inch strips of macrame cord

Cut a length of cord doubled over at 20 inches. Then just cut that in half, and cut those in half again. Now you have four 10″ pieces of macrame cord. Holding them all in your hand at the same time, cut them in half again and that leaves you with eight 5″ pieces. Repeat this step multiple times until you have a stock pile nearby.

How to make a boho bunny wreath

This DIY Easter wreath was not only inexpensive, but it was super easy to make. All you need to do is master one very simple macrame knot, the lark’s head knot. This literally has to be the easiest knot there is in macrame, so don’t worry! I think it is easier to make these knots from the back side so I turned my wreath form over and worked from the back. There really is no back or front to this bunny wreath form, except that the middle ring sticks out more on one side. I deemed that the front of the wreath.

To make the lark’s head knot, take a 5″ piece of cord and fold it in half. Put the folded end under the outside ring of the bunny form. With two fingers, reach through the looped end and pull the cut ends through loop. Make sure the cut ends are mostly even and pull the ends to tighten the knot on the wreath form.

Tie lark's head knot onto outside ring

That’s it! I told you it was easy! This is what it looks like from the front side.

Lark's head knot from front

Repeat that with the rest of 5″ strips and I will talk to you next week. Hahaha! Kidding! It really didn’t take that long, I made this Easter bunny wreath in one afternoon. I worked in sections of the wreath form filling the outside ring first. Push the knots together to fit as many as you can in the sections. You want it to be full of knots but not overlapping.

Tie on strings around outside ring

Work until you hit the bunny ears, but do not fill in the ears. It is unnecessary and I feel like it would create extra bulk around the ear. You can see how it look from the back on the left side and from the front on the right side in the picture below.

tie macrame cord around outside ring minus the ears

Repeat on the middle ring

After you finish the outside ring of the bunny head, go to the middle ring and repeat using the same process.

Start filling middle row with macrame knots

This time you will go all the way around the ring with the lark’s head knots.

How to make a boho bunny wreath

Fill the inside ring

Next fill the inside ring the same way. As you work around the bunny head, you can move the macrame cord from the back of the wreath to the front. This is easily done by using a pair of closed scissors. Just push the ends of the knots through the opening between the rings. This will give you the layered look on the front.

Adding knots to top row of boho bunny wreath

Cover the bunny ears

Lastly you will cover the bunny ears. Start all the way at the bottom of the ear and fill it with knots all the up to the point of the ear. Make sure you add enough knots so that it is filled snugly. Repeat this on the other side.

Fill bunny ear with macrame knots

Fray the macrame cord

After you have the whole bunny wreath form filled with lark’s head knots, you will want to fray the ends to give it the fuzzy fur look. To fray the macrame cord, I use a fine tooth rat tail comb and separate the cord strands. You can also brush it out if you want but that is not necessary.

Fray the macrame cord ends

Do this on all the macrame knots on the whole wreath. I found it easiest to start on the bottom layer and fold the top layers up while I worked. Then work your way up the layers.

Frayed edges on boho bunny

This fringe can look a little uneven. If you want, you can trim it up around the bottom, outside ring. There is no need to do it on the inside layers. Really, the uneveness fits in well with the boho look anyway. I only trimmed where it was really long and left the rest.

Trim edges of outside row

Now you have your fuzzy boho bunny head! 🙂 If you wanted, you could attach another round wreath form filled the same way with knots to the bottom to make a body. That would be really cute too!

Boho bunny wreath finished

Add some removable decorations

At this point you can leave him like he is, but I chose to add some decorations to this cute bunny. Like I discussed above, I didn’t want to glue anything down so I can reuse it later in a different way. So I decided just to attach some accents in a temporary fashion. I used mini clothespins to achieve this. For the ears, I cut some pieces of pink felt, just slightly smaller than the ear itself. Then I attached them with the clothespins at the bottom to the outside ring. Once the wreath is hanging, the ears stayed in place without the need for clothespins at the top.

Cut pink felt to line bunny ears

I also added the flower and side greenery in the same way. I used a flower that I had leftover from this Easter wreath, along with some small pieces of lamb’s ear and eucalyptus greenery. They all had medium length stems so I grouped them together and stuck the stems through the fringe. Then using a clothespin, I attached them all to the fringe on the back. I do not have a picture as it is hard to see but you get the idea how to do it.

Hang your boho bunny wreath

You could hang this boho bunny wreath on your front door, or just set it on a console table or bookshelf in a vignette. For now, I have it hanging on our coat rack in the entryway so he greets all our guests. 😉 Luckily, the hooks happened to be spaced the perfect distance apart.

Love This!.. Going to try. I see you used small clothing pins to hold the felt to the ears. How does the felt stay up if the clothing pins are attached on the bottom? Just curious. Absolutely beautiful!

Hi Tanya! Thank you so much! You could try it but I don’t know that the felt will stay up that way, it is too pliable. Good luck! 🙂

Hey Kimberly – I thought you stated you used clothing pins on the felt ears. I was asking you how you get them to stay up?

Oh sorry! Not sure what I was thinking that day I replied. Ha! The felt kinda “stuck” to the macramé cord well enough when it was hung up that I did not need to attach it with anything. If yours won’t stay up, you could always put a dab of hot glue at the top of each ear.
