Do you like to decorate for St. Patrick’s Day? Since we celebrate a birthday around our house on the day, it is kinda a must that we decorate for it. 🙂 I have a fun and easy DIY project for you today. This Book Page Shamrock DIY is a project anyone could make! I get a little tired of seeing the same tacky St. Patrick’s Day decor in the stores every year, so I guess I just have to make my own. Ha!
Instead of going overtly green in my decorating this year, I wanted to go with a farmhouse look with more neutral colors. Of course, there will still be pops of green too.
I love using books in my decorating. In fact, I have done several book page projects and have even made these little book page roses before. Last time I put the roses on a pumpkin, this time it is a shamrock. In fact, if you don’t know how to make a book page rose, you will want to check out this pumpkin post as it shows you exactly how to make them.

For this project you will need:
- Shamrock template
- Antique White acrylic paint
- Small Paintbrush
- Old used books
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Scissors
I found this shamrock template at Hobby Lobby. It is the same kind I used for my diy wood shim shamrock also. It is a great size and can be used in so many ways.
I learned a lesson from my book page pumpkin to paint the shamrock first before adding the book roses. The roses don’t fit together perfectly so you see a little bit of the background of whatever you are covering. It looks better if it matches the book page color. Trust me!
I used this antique white acrylic paint and just painted on one coat. It didn’t need to be two coated since you would only see a little bit between the roses. I painted the sides as well. This color matched the color of my book pages very well.
Starting with the stem and around the edges, hot glue the roses onto the shamrock. I let the roses overlap the edges just a bit.
Next, just nestle roses up to the ones you have previously glued down. My roses all turned out slightly different sizes depending on how tightly or loosely they were rolled. That is beneficial in that sometimes you need a bigger rose to fill a space and sometimes you need a smaller rose to fit in a small area.
Now just keep going with this until you have the whole shamrock full. Yes, it did take a little while. But like always, I worked on it while watching some TV over several evenings. The Bachelor anyone? 😁 Who are you rooting for? I am torn between Cassie and Tayshia! I can’t wait to see the finale next week! Anyway, this was a nice mindless activity to do while I was binge watching.
Make sure you don’t cover the hole to hang it by. I used some grosgrain ribbon to hang it on this boxwood wreath. Don’t you just love how the green wreath pops around the neutral colored shamrock? I will be sharing my mantel soon so you can get a better overall look then.
This book page shamrock ends up being a really sturdy piece of decor. It was super easy and fun to make and I love the dimension the roses give to the shamrock!
I will be sharing another fun St. Patrick’s Day DIY project soon as well as my neutral mantel decor. Let me know if you end up making one on these shamrocks. It is always fun to hear from you all!
[…] my books, though I probably have some book drafts I’d be happy to donate!) Anyway, I love the versatility of this shamrock – this can hang as it is in front of a wreath, or simply over a door, or prop up on a […]
