Make this easy, fun and festive chain garland this year to add some color, texture and a cozy homemade vibe to your decorating!
I know y’all love easy crafts and I do too! So today I am going to share a super simple craft with you! This ribbon chain garland can be whipped up in no time and is a cute and inexpensive addition to add to your decor.
This craft is so straightforward that I contemplated if I should even make a tutorial for it. In fact, you may even remember making a chain garland back in school, I think I do! However, instead of making it with paper like we did in school, I am making this chain garland with ribbon!
There are so many fun ribbon choices to choose from and it makes the chain garland even more uncomplicated to create since you are not cutting strips of paper. Even though you may know how to basically construct it already, I have taken out all of the guesswork for you on what you need and all the details.
Make for different occasions
While I made this ribbon chain garland for Christmas, these can be made for anything when you want to add a little party vibe! They can also be made with lots of different colors, patterns and out of various materials. You could use paper, felt or even strips of fabric! Lots of choices!

- Ribbon of your choice – I used this 1.5″ wired ribbon to give it a little more stability in holding it’s shape.
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Ruler
How to make a chain garland
The first step is to cut your ribbon into small strips. I cut mine down to 9″ in length. I wanted to keep the gingham pattern of the ribbon as seamless as possible so I cut the ribbon at the start of the next color block closest to the 9 inch mark.
Cut the whole roll of ribbon into the 9″ strips. I used the chain garland on my mantel so I actually used two spools of ribbon. Where you are using it will determine how long you need to make it.
Take your first strip of ribbon and add hot glue to one of the ends of the ribbon. I added it to the first and second blocks of color on the strips. Line up the other end of ribbon so it is a seamless transition and pat the two ends together. It will be hot! Also, I am not sure if the glue seeped through the ribbon or if there is a waxy coating on the ribbon that melted a bit, but that would get on my fingers and I would have to rub it off in between gluing the strips.
Now you have one chain link of ribbon.

Take another strip and put it through the opening on the first chain link. Glue the ends of the second link together the same way you did with the first.
Continue adding chain links until you have gotten through the whole pile.
That’s it! I think this is the easiest craft I have ever shared! You never know though, it may be helpful to someone! I hung mine on the mantel using some command hooks that were already up there for the greenery.
In addition to the mantel, I also made some to hang from our coat hook in the entryway. You could also use them on cabinets or media stands, cupboards in the kitchen, even on the table or hanging in the doorway. It is always fun to add a homemade touch to your decorating.
I will be back soon with another fun craft for you before I share my trees for this year! Chat soon friends!
