This beautiful colorful Christmas tree was inspired by vintage trees of Christmases past. It incorporates all the wonderful vintage hues including silver and gold combined with a touch of modern from the Eucalyptus and lamb’s ear.
Whew! I am getting this post done in the St. Nick of time! 🙂 Christmas is in TWO days!! When I was deciding what to do for my tree this year, it really wasn’t a hard decision. We are renting a house that was built in the 1950’s and still has a lot of that flair to it. So it was a no brainer that I had to go with a colorful vintage style Christmas tree.
Of course, once you get the tree colors decided, the rest of your decor usually follows suit! At least that is how it is with me. How about you? Do you coordinate your tree with the rest of your decorations?
Trimming the colorful Christmas tree
It was fun to do this colorful Christmas tree this year since I had not done one before. I found the perfect colorful ornaments at Hobby Lobby. They are actual glass ornaments so they may not be the best choice for those of you with littles running around.
However, that fact that they are glass and color combination of the ornaments just give a vintage-y vibe to me. I combined them with some silver, gold and red ornaments that I already had. The result is magical!
Some real vintage mercury glass ornaments would be the cherry on top, maybe I will have to start collecting some. However they can get a little a lot pricey! I like to think that my tree shows that you don’t need actual vintage ornaments to get the same vintage style feel. It is definitely easier on the pocketbook! 😉
I feel like you walk a thin line with using so many colors. Sometimes it is hard to keep it from looking like a circus (if you know what I mean)! I wanted to keep my tree classy and understated so I let the ornaments be the main focus. At first I didn’t even add ribbon. However, I felt like the ornaments were not enough on their own.
Add some greenery for a modern take on a vintage style Christmas tree
So I added some springs of Lamb’s Ear and Eucalyptus along with some muted gold ribbon. I absolutely LOVE the faux greenery in the tree. It adds some softness and almost like a calming effect to the colors on the tree.
I love adding different sized ornaments on my trees. They are perfect to fill in any areas that are a little sparse. I usually start with the big ornaments first and fill in with the small ornaments. Then any picks/faux greenery and lastly the ribbon.
Instead of stringing the whole roll of ribbon around the tree, I like to cut the ribbon into 3-4 foot sections and loop it into the tree. This makes your ribbon go a lot further and makes the tree look more full.
Coordinating the presents with my colorful Christmas tree
Again with my presents, I wanted to keep them understated to keep from having competing colors. So I decided on using white and kraft colored wrapping paper. I just shared my super cute cross stitch gifts tags with you and I think they are the perfect subtle pop of color to coordinate with the tree.
Matching the rest of the decor
I love to have all my decor work together. To achieve this, I filled our DIY dough bowl with the same colorful vintage style ornaments. I once saw a picture of a dough bowl filled with multicolored ornaments and loved it! So I was really excited to try it with these ornaments. I think it looks stunning!
Another use for the ornaments was in our DIY sugar mold. It also looks wonderful!
There is a built in bookshelf in this house so I used that for some fun glitter cone trees. I made these to coordinate with my colorful Christmas tree. I had a forest of trees by the time I was done. LOL
While I was at it, I also made some raffia cone trees. These are nice in that they go with any color scheme, even my colorful one!
I also wanted to hang some stockings this year but the ones we usually use are red and green striped and I thought that would be too much competing color. So I got these white stockings and added just a touch of color with these DIY wood bead stocking tags.
Using what you have on hand
I made a simple vignette on this hall table with some candles and trees. On the wreath, I added some multicolor mini ornaments to tie into the remaining decor. The wreath is in front of our DIY tobacco basket. This was one of the first DIY’s we did on my blog and remains one of my favorites. I use it all the time in my decorating.
There are a lot of staple items that I use in my decorating like this tobacco basket and the other DIY’s in this post that we have previously made. I like to show different ways to use the items you have instead of feeling like you have to go out and buy something new all the time.
I will close this post by sharing a picture of our colorful Christmas tree all lit up at night. One of my favorite things about this time of year is sitting in a room only lit by the light of a Christmas tree. It is so cozy and relaxing. I hope you have enjoyed my colorful vintage style Christmas tree and other decorations.
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See in 2021, let’s hope it is a better year for all.
