Your cupcake skills are about to jump to the next level! Today I am going to show you how to make your own super cute cupcake liners! These DIY cupcake liners are so easy and will make your cupcakes look like they came from a bakery!
We recently held an Eagle Court of Honor for our son and I was in charge of the cupcake display. I knew I wanted to do something a little different for the cupcake liners. I thought about making some cupcake wrappers out of scrapbook paper. Then I saw a picture of the cupcakes from the Silos Baking Co. at Magnolia Market…

Aren’t they are gorgeous?! I loved the liners and immediately searched them out. I found some on Amazon (affiliate link) if anyone is not interested in making them. Although being a DIYer at heart, I knew I could make these on my own somehow. ๐ So I set out to try my hand at them. While they are not Magnolia Market level, I was really pleased with how they turned out. What do you think?
We already had some parchment paper at home so I started playing around with it to make my own. I looked at the store for light brown parchment paper but could not find any, so I stuck with the white. I had the idea to tie a piece of twine around each cupcake as the finishing touch but the parchment paper was too slippery! The twine would not stay on, even with a dab of hot glue! Oh well, in the end I am glad because that would have made way more work for myself!
The first thing you need to do is find a cup/glass/bottle that will fit exactly into one of the cups on your muffin pan. This old kid’s cup was the only thing I could find in our house to fit exactly so this is what you get. Ha! This cup/glass/bottle is what you will form your cupcake liners around.
Next you will need to cut parchment paper into 5″ squares. I tried different sizes and also liked the look of 5.5″, 6″ and even 6.5″ squares but since the parchment paper was 15″ across, I could get 3 squares out of one cut. So sensibility won out. If I wasn’t making so many cupcakes, I may have went with a bigger size. The bigger size squares will get you a taller liner similar to the Magnolia Market ones.
Center the square on your cup and bend down two opposing corners. Then bend down the other two corners with your other hand. I wanted to try to keep all the points sticking up and not be folded, however sometimes it was inevitable. After you have the corners folded down, use your hands to smooth down the rest of the parchment paper. I went over it a couple times to make sure it was firmly pressed into place.
It took a little practice but soon it was easy. They held their shape pretty well.
Place 12 in your muffin pan. They may not stay all the way in the cups until you fill the cups with batter.
We used a gallon sized Ziploc bag with the corner snipped off to fill the cupcake liners without getting the batter all over. I knew a spoon was not going to cut it with my shaky hands. ๐ There would have been batter all over the liners!
The cupcakes baked up beautifully and pulled apart from the parchment paper so nicely. You did not have half of your cupcake sticking to the liner like you sometimes do with regular cupcake liners.
I made 6 different kinds of cupcakes for the court of honor. Lots of flavors including raspberry filled ones! Here is anย easy way to make filled cupcakes and also that post includes a way to make your box cupcakes taste like homemade! The cupcakes turned out great and I am inclined to make these wrappers in the future instead of buying store bought ones. Especially when I want fancy looking cupcakes! ๐
To see the full cupcake display, check out myย Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ideas post. It has lots of great ideas (including free printable labels) that could be used for any patriotic event. Like those 4th of July parties that are right around the corner!
These are awsesome! My next endeavor! Pinned it. ๐
Thanks Michele!:)
These are so adorable, not-to-mention easy! I love how it makes your cupcakes look elegant without dictating what icing colors and decorations you have to use (like regular wrappers do). Pinned for our next birthday party!
Thanks Marie! They were super easy to make. I agree they look very fancy and you can do whatever color icing you want! ๐
This is cool I just have one question because I canโt tell from the photos .. shiny side of parchment down into the cupcake tin or shiny side up for easier removal of cupcakes from liner .? And thank you btw
Hi Sarah! Thank you! Actually, the kind of parchment paper I used did not really have a shiny side, it looked matte on both sides. Or if it did, I did not notice! LOL If I had to choose though I would put shiny side up for easier removal of the cupcakes. However, they remove very easily. That is one of the things I loved about these liners! ๐
Weโre these regular sized cupcakes or jumbo sized? They look tall.
Hi Felicia! These are regular sized cupcakes. ๐
