Join me today as I show you how to make this DIY paper garland with hearts. It is a fun and simple craft that will add some cuteness to any space.
Recently I was browsing in a store at Disney Springs called Sugarboo & Co. and saw a paper heart garland similar to this. I thought it was super cute and I was inspired to make my own. I knew I would be able to make one for a fraction of the price. Turns out I was right! 🙂
The DIY paper garland also happened to work perfectly with my neutral Valentine’s Day decor this year. You can see both kraft and white colored heart garlands hanging on my mantel.

Punch out a bunch of hearts
I found my heart paper punches at Hobby Lobby. Make sure to get them a week when they are on sale! The punches themselves were really the only investment in this project, but they are something I know I can use in the future as well! If you don’t have a Hobby Lobby near you, I also linked out to some similar punches above on Amazon. The first step is to use your heart punches and make three piles of the different sized hearts. It was easier to tell where you are punching if you turn the heart punch upside down.
Another perk to doing it this way was that I was able to save space on the paper and punch out a row across the bottom edge.
Once I had punched a whole row, I cut off the hearts to make a straight edge to start again.
I used a couple sheets of paper for each of the different sized hearts. In addition to the white paper, I also made punched some hearts from kraft colored wrapping paper.
Sew the hearts together to make a DIY paper garland
Place the different sized hearts in separate piles next to your sewing machine.
Insert a heart under the presser foot lining up the arrow in the middle of the foot with the middle of the heart. Then start sewing a straight line down the center of the heart. You can adjust the stitch length to make a longer stitch if you prefer that look.
Keep adding individual hearts to the garland, grabbing them at random. I did not sew them on in any rhyme or reason of size, I thought it looked more appealing this way. You can make the garlands any length you want. I made mine about 9 foot in length.
Hang the heart garland DIY to display it
I hung my heart garlands on my mantel for Valentine’s Day. I added them together with some wood bead garlands and think it looks spectacular! What do you think?
The DIY paper garland with hearts would also look fabulous hanging on a bookshelf, across a window or even just on the wall.
Talk about simple, right? Even though you use a sewing machine for this craft, no sewing skills are needed! The sewing machine does all the work for you! My next Valentine’s Day craft I will be sharing is that beautiful feather heart on my mantel. Did you see it? Stay tuned for that tutorial!
