How are your Christmas preparations coming along? I am about 95% done decorating, and have even done some shopping so I am feeling pretty good about where I am sitting this year. Now I have to focus on wrapping some presents to get under the tree. We will be sharing some gift wrapping ideas next week but today for the 6th day of Christmas, we are sharing DIY ornaments. This year I made a DIY wooden bead feather ornament to go along with my tree.
You can find the tutorial below, and at the bottom of the post check out all the other DIY Christmas ornaments from the many talented bloggers we have joining us for this blog hop.

This ornament was really easy to make and could work for any Christmas tree theme or color scheme. I wasn’t sure what to call it since it is just an abstract ornament. I just wanted something pretty to go on my tree. π

For this project you will need:
- Wood Beads
- Feathers
- Crochet or Embroidery Thread and Needle
- Acrylic Paint
- Small Paint Brush
- Scissors
I chose to paint only the middle bead on the ornament, but you could paint all of them if you wanted. Or none of them. I just held the beads while painting them. The acrylic paint dried very quickly so I was able to assemble the ornaments soon after I painted them.
First thread a needle with embroidery thread. Do not tie the end, put the needle in the middle of the thread so it is doubled over. To assemble the ornament, run the length of embroidery thread up all three beads. You need to leave a loop at the top of the ornament for the hook to hang it. Run one strand of the thread back down the three beads. It is easier to do this one bead at a time. Put an extra feather through the loop at the top of the ornament to prevent the thread from coming back through the beads.
After the thread is run back down through all three beads, take two feathers and stick the quill ends into the hole of the bottom bead. Insert them far enough that they fit snugly. Tie the two ends of the embroidery thread into a knot around the feathers right below the bead. Cut off the extra length of thread.
Remove the feather from the loop at the top and hang the ornament from a hook. Be careful not to let the thread go back down the beads. I left my ornaments like this as I may want to reuse the beads for another project later. If you want to keep your ornaments forever, you can always put a little hot glue into the end bead to secure the beads to the thread.
I like these hooks as I know the ornament will not fall off easily. Plus they are pretty! π
The ornaments kinda remind me of abstract little birds with long tail feathers. Do you think so too?
I am sure you can guess the colors of my tree this year by these pictures. You will have to wait a little longer to see the whole tree though! I know! I am so mean! π Don’t forget to check out the other DIY ornaments below. Have a wonderful weekend!

Oh man, I love that you painted only the center bead that beautiful coppery color! It’s the perfect subtle blend of textures and colors for this ornament.
Thanks Nikki! I love the different textures too. π
These are so pretty! Love how you painted just one bead metallic. The feathers make this ornament so angelic. Love them , Kimberly π

The ornaments are so pretty. I love how elegant they are.
Thanks Debra! I really loved how they turned out too!
I love this sooo much! I’ve often found feathers during particularly tough times and feel they’re a signal that everything is going to be okay. So something like this would be perfect for our tree.
I love that thought Susan! I am going to start looking for feathers during tough times. Thanks for sharing! π
