This felt leaf wreath is not only easy to make, but also an adorable addition to your decor! Use these colors for fall, or change up the colors to make for a different holiday or season.
I am slipping in a few more fall posts before moving onto Christmas. Looking at social media, I feel like I am way behind the eight ball! Have you started your Christmas decorating yet? Truthfully I have too, but part of me wants to resist decorating until after Thanksgiving just on principle. Ha! Actually, this felt leaf wreath could work for Christmas too, just use a combination of green and red colors, or whatever your color scheme is!
This DIY fall wreath was pretty easy to make although it does take some time. Some of the tasks like cutting out the felt leaves and wrapping the wire with floral tape can get a little tedious. However, just do these while watching your favorite show and it makes the time go by faster. I finished this wreath after working on it for a couple afternoons.
I have seen similar wreaths to this felt leaf wreath on Etsy and decided to make my own version of it. If you are not a crafter, you can always buy one on Etsy. I found some cute ones here and here.
I used these colors to coordinate with the fall decor in my dining room, which I will be sharing soon. The great thing about this kind of wreath is that you can customize it to any colors you want!
It is hard to tell from the pictures but this DIY fall wreath has a nice three dimensional look to it as well. The stems are made from wire, so they are bendable. You can adjust the leaves to stand out a little more or stay in the background. Here is a profile view of the wreath.

How to make a felt leaf wreath
The first step to making this wreath is to wrap the steel ring, and wire to make stems for the leaves to attach to, with floral tape. My steel ring was silver and my wire was gold but I wanted my wreath and stems to be brown in color so I wrapped them both in brown floral tape.
Realistically though, you need to use the floral tape to attach the stems anyway, so this is not that extra of a step. If you wanted to save yourself some time, you could get these brown wire floral stems instead so you don’t have to wrap the wire too. However, I liked the thickness that the floral tape gave to the stems. Also, the stems and ring matched perfectly so it looks like the finished wreath was bought like this.
To make the stems for the leaves to attach to, I used 18 gauge wire so that the stems would be bendable so I could move them to where I wanted them to be. The 18 gauge wire was stout enough that it did this perfectly. I worked in about 10-12″ sections when wrapping my wire. Just a tip, you have to stretch the floral tape to activate the adhesive on it as you are wrapping. Your fingers will get sticky, so I just washed my hands in between each section.
Using wire cutters, cut the wrapped wire into stems 2¼” long. Cut out 80 stems. It doesn’t hurt to cut out a couple extra just in case. 😉
Print out the leaf template
The next step is to print out the leaf template onto a piece of paper or card stock. I like using card stock when I am doing a lot of cutting so my template holds up. When you are printing, make sure you print this template at 100% to make sure the size is correct. Every printer is different so just make sure your settings are not set to ‘fit to page‘ or that the box is not checked letting your printer make changes. The printed leaf template should be about 2¾″ long. After you print the leaf, just cut it out with some scissors.
Cut out felt leaves
To cut out the felt leaves, it was easier to cut the felt into rectangles first. To do this, I folded the felt sheet in half widthwise and cut it on the fold.
Then I folded the half sheet in half again and measured and cut every two inches. As I went along though, I decided I did not need to be that precise and just started cutting this piece into 4 parts by just cutting it in half and subsequently cutting those pieces in half. You want to end up with folded over rectangles about 2″ x 3″ in size.
You leave it folded over so you can cut two leaves out at the same time. Hold the leaf template against the felt rectangle and cut it out.
Repeat this step with all 5 colors of felt. You will end up with 16 leaves of each color. You may want to get one extra felt sheet in case you need to cut out a couple more leaves. I had planned to use 80 stems/leaves but in the end had to use 81 to make the spacing look correct.
Attach the leaf stems to wreath
Now you will start attaching the wire stems onto the floral tape wrapped ring.
I measured around the 14″ ring and figured that I would need to space the stems about ½” apart. Also, I alternated the side that each stem was attached to. Some of the stems attached more to the side and some more to the front which gives the wreath a little more dimension.
To attach a stem, I bent the first ½” of it down to fit against the wreath ring. Then I wrapped the brown floral tape around that part of the stem about three to four times to make sure it was secured.
Continue adding stems until you have the full ring completed. The floral tape easily adheres to itself which is another advantage to having the steel ring wrapped.
Add the felt leaves to the stems
Now you can start adding the leaves to the stems. All you have to do is add a drop of hot glue to one end of a leaf, hold that glue against the end of a stem and pinch the end of the leaf onto the stem.
I arranged mine in a specific color pattern (of course I did… LOL) so I laid out my color pattern on each side to make it easier to grab the next one in that round. I did the same pattern on both sides but just started with different colors so I did not have the same colors across from each other on the felt leaf wreath.
Continue until you have all the leaves added to the stems.
Arrange the stems on your DIY felt leaf wreath
The last and most important step to making your wreath look beautiful is to shape and bend the stems to arrange the leaves in a aesthetically pleasing way. I bent some of the stems forward, some up, some down and some even crossing the center wreath ring.
It was really cool to see the wreath come to life in this step. Watch the video and you will see what I mean. 🙂
Hang your fall felt wreath and enjoy!
You have a couple options to hang your wreath, you can just use a wreath hanger as shown in these pictures.
Alternatively, you can get some coordinating ribbon and hang the wreath from that. I actually hung it from a mirror in our dining room with this ribbon. You can see that in my next post!
I hope you will make one of these gorgeous wreaths. It turned out so great! I think a Christmas one would be so pretty! You can even add some balls to the middle of the leaves like they did on some in the Etsy shops. Who knows, I may be making more! 😉 Chat soon friends!
