Gothic Halloween Decor

by Kimberly Leave a Comment

Do you like to go spooky or fun with your Halloween decorations? If spooky is your style, check out my gothic Halloween decor. It leans to the spookier side without getting too edgy.

Hey friends! Fall is officially here! Are you ready for it or are you still holding onto summer? I have been getting ready for it by working on some fun Halloween and fall projects to share with you, and today I am starting with these gothic Halloween decor ideas. But don’t worry, if you gravitate towards more playful Halloween decor, then you are in luck because I have some great projects coming up for you. Stay tuned for those!

Ok, so technically I think maybe I should call this gothic-ish or gothic-lite Halloween decor. πŸ™‚ While it certainly has gothic aspects to it, I am not sure I could go full out Gothic with my Halloween decor. But who knows, I have lots of ideas brewing up in my head right now, so never say never, right?

Gothic Halloween decor on top of a murphy bed

These decorations sit on top of our murphy bed which for the past year and a half, due to moving and lack of space to put it elsewhere, it has held up residence in our main living areas. So of course I am going to decorate it!

The decorations on top over that time have kept the same theme with the tiered tray on the left and a big vase on the right, along with a big sign in the middle. This is an easy way to switch out your decor for holidays. Keep your staple pieces the same and change out the details pieces. Here are some other examples of how I have decorated the murphy bed over this past year:

  • Spring Vignette with Butterflies
  • Dining Room Christmas Decor
  • Farmhouse Fall Decor
  • Lemon Summer Sideboard

Big center focal point

Speaking of that big sign in the middle, we actually made it as an interchangeable front porch sign but I have also found that it works great indoors. Ha! It is a large scale background focal piece but it works perfectly to balance the whole top of the murphy bed. I think that is sometimes the biggest mistake that people make in decorating, going too small with their decor pieces. If you have the room, go big!

Boo sign with spooky Halloween decor

I draped it with some gauzy cheesecloth from the dollar store. This also ties into the cheesecloth on top of the murphy bed. Here I layered both black and white cheesecloth for added interest. Lastly, I also added a big black spider on the boo sign.

Spider Halloween decoration

This is a poseable spider that I got years ago, along with most of the items that I have used. I am a big proponent of using what you already have to decorate with instead of buying new all the time. However, I understand that people don’t have all these items and in order to recreate the look, they may need to buy items. To make that easier, I will some add helpful links to similar items at the bottom of this post for y’all!

In the large vase, I added some stems and cut out bat shapes with card stock to stick into the stems. This is a super easy way to bring some Halloween vibes into any area.

Sadly, this may be the last time you see the murphy bed decorated. Because, happily, we got a new couch and that is now sitting on this wall. The murphy bed has been moved into a bedroom so it can be used as it was intended. However, the nice thing is that the mantel is back up above the new couch so I can decorate that again with reckless abandon! πŸ™‚

Halloween three tiered tray

I added some details to my tiered tray to tie into the gothic Halloween decor theme. This is actually a place that I did buy some new things. It is so great that a lot of stores now carry smaller items specifically for three tiered tray decor.

I found this spooky sign at Walmart in their “dollar section”. They must have realized that Target was onto to something with that. LOL The pumpkin in the background came from Walmart as well. Nothing says gothic like ravens, amiright? The raven came from the dollar store years ago.

These awesome little potion bottles also surprisingly came from the dollar store this year. I shouldn’t be surprised though, it seems like they always have great Halloween decor.

I think this rat is trying to sneak off with one of the pumpkins! πŸ˜‰

Hanging on the top of the tray like King Kong is this lovely hairy spider. He is a smaller cousin to the large spider on the sign.

Gothic Halloween decor in glass containers

I love decorating with glass containers, they are definitely staple pieces that I would recommend anyone to buy. These glass containers are the perfect way to display your spooky halloween decorations.

Gothic Halloween decor in cloches

You don’t have to have the same glass containers, feel free to mix up apothecary jars, cloches, vases or regular jars. The fact that they are all glass will be enough to tie them together. These glass pieces work great as focal pieces in front of the boo sign.

Skeletons and skull in glass cloche

The addition of the Spanish moss in this apothecary jar helps to add to the gothic feel of the skeletons in there.

I love this big skull and have used it countless times in my Halloween decorating. It looks so good under the cloche, does it not?

In this glass vase, I added some smaller skulls and Halloween vase filler balls that I made up years ago. They are a simple DIY project, just cut small strips of fabric and pin them onto Styrofoam balls.

Finally in the smaller cloche is another one of those pesky rats. He must have gotten trapped in there somehow, looks like he is trying to get out.

Pay attention to your color scheme

I still felt like this Halloween vignette needed a little more, so I added some other detail pieces to the sides of the glass containers.

One one side is this black owl with some more skulls and a few pumpkins. The owl definitely gives a gothic vibe. His black color also helped to balance out the big black spider on the other side.

On the other side, I added a big white pumpkin, it helps to tone down the big black spider. In front of the large vase is a skull on a black candlestick and a small orange pumpkin. Did you catch the overall black and white theme with a few touches of orange and purple here and there?

I love things to be in balance with my decorating and this applies to colors as well.
