Are you looking for an understated way to decorate for Halloween? Try this spooky Halloween ghost decor! The ironstone pitchers with dried floral stems along with the color scheme give it a vintage Boho feel.
This year for Halloween, I was actually thinking about skipping the decorations. I know! Gasp! I was in the midst of my fall decor posts and my mind was already gearing towards Christmas decor so I didn’t want to bother with Halloween. However, our boys really like it so I decided to decorate one room which includes the mantel shelf. I tried a more subtle and muted look this year and I absolutely love how this Halloween ghost decor turned out!
I am loving the vintage color scheme of this Boho Halloween decor! There is something about it that has a retro 70’s vibe. Must be all the cream, browns, mustard yellow and rust orange. 😉 It is a really nice change from the usual black and orange colors for Halloween.
Make your own ghost pitchers
The old white ironstone pitchers also help to lend to the vintage feel. Speaking of the pitchers, what do you think of them as ghosts? Cute, right?! I did not buy these, they are all pitchers that I had already on hand.
They were really easy to make into ghosts. All I did was cut some ovals and circles out of some black vinyl and stick them on. It was sooooo simple but makes a big impact. You could literally do this with any pitchers, vases or containers you have at home. It is an easy, subtle way to incorporate Halloween decor without doing much.
I printed off some ovals on some cardstock at first to trace but ended up freehand cutting them because I liked the look of the uneven circles better. I thought they fit the ghost look more than perfect ovals would. After Halloween, all I have to do is peel off the vinyl and they will be back to normal. Easy, peasy!
Make your own Halloween ghost art
Another DIY project on this mantel is this cool ghost art that I made. I am pretty proud with how it turned out! I had the idea to make an art piece when I was making my cheesecloth ghosts that I shared last week, if you missed that tutorial, check it out! They turned out fantastic too!
I used a plain wood circle sign that I bought previously at Hobby Lobby. You can also see it used in my vintage Valentine’s decor. I didn’t want to glue the ghosts straight onto the wood circle so that I can continue to use it in future decorating. So, I cut some poster board to fit inside the circle to create my art masterpiece on. 😉 Then after it was finished, I just taped in down to the wood. You can see the poster board more clearly in the picture below.
On the poster board, I haphazardly applied a thin layer of joint compound and let it dry. It gave the background some great texture! After the joint compound dried, I sponged on some cream colored acrylic paint, followed by a tan color. Then using the same technique as the cheesecloth ghosts, I added the ghosts to the art piece. I love how they look very flowy on the bottom. The different textures on this DIY ghost sign are fabulous!!
Like I said earlier, I was thrilled with how it came out. Not to pat myself on the back too much, but I would totally buy this in the store if I saw it. Ha!! It was so easy too you guys! You should try to make one for yourselves! Sorry there is not a full tutorial, but really, just watch this cheesecloth ghost tutorial and you will get the gist on how to make it. Deal?
Boho Halloween Decor
These dried floral stems are what really give this Halloween mantel decor a boho feel. I scrounged among all my faux floral stems and put together these arrangements. Most of these stems came from Hobby Lobby if you want to try to recreate this look. I especially like the rust orange fig berry stems.
You may recognize this ‘boo’ sign. It was part of the interchangeable front porch sign that we made. I also used it before on my Halloween gallery wall. It has come in handy for Halloween time! 🙂
Add some spookiness
The spooky factor of this Halloween ghost decor is increased by the black ravens and gauzy material. I love using both of these things when decorating for Halloween. They just up the spookiness tenfold!
Another spooky element is not on the mantel but on a side table. I added a skull and place some dried stems in it’s mouth.
This is a great example of boho Halloween decor! You could recreate this look with different florals to give it a different vibe. using more dark colored florals stems would make a great gothic look!
On the other side of the room, I added the cheesecloth ghosts on our media console table with our DIY sugar mold and more skulls.
I hope you enjoyed my whipped up Halloween decor as much as I do! I will be back soon with a couple more fall posts then onto Christmas!! Whew! I can’t believe it is that time of year already! It comes around faster and faster each year! Chat soon friends!
