Do you have some farmhouse signs you don’t use anymore? Don’t get rid of them, you can easily and inexpensively upcycle them to coordinate with your décor!
I found some great deals on clearance at Hobby Lobby recently. Some of those deals included varied sizes of farmhouse signs. It really didn’t matter to me what they looked like because I was not interested in them for the pictures they had on them. I was planning on changing them to match with my décor. Today I will show you how to easily upcycle signs so you can too!
This would be great to do with any existing signs you have around too. It is a nice way to give your stuff new life. And not to mention a little easier on the pocketbook, rather than buying all new signs.
You got to see one of my upcycled signs on my lemon summer sideboard display the other day. It is the sign below in the background just to refresh your memory. Cute, right?
In addition to the sideboard, I also decorated another vignette and was wanting a couple signs for it but didn’t really want to buy signs to match for a one time use. That is what originally gave me this idea. This way I can change these signs out as much as I want. And bonus, I found the signs on clearance!
This was a quick ten minute project. Really, it couldn’t be more simple! If you are more of a visual learner, I made a little video that you can watch below showing you how to easily upcycle signs. If you can’t see the video, turn off your ad blocker. If you want more detailed instructions, continue reading.
Supplies needed to upcycle your signs
*There are links to products in this post that I use or are similar to products I use. If you buy something from one of these links, I may make a small commission (with no additional cost to you) from the purchase. I will not recommend anything that I would not buy myself.
- Farmhouse Signs
- Scrapbook Paper – I found my paper at Hobby Lobby but linked to some similar beautiful paper from Amazon if you don’t have a Hobby Lobby near you!
- Cutting mat, rotary cutter and 24″ ruler – this is optional, you can just use scissors to cut your paper but these tools make cutting so much easier!
- Tape Measure/Ruler
- Tape
This works best with the farmhouse style of signs where the frame protrudes out more than the actual picture does. However, you could also use the same idea to update framed art as well. As long as it is on the smaller side because you are limited by the size of the scrapbook paper.
Cut your scrapbook paper to size
The first thing you will want to do is to measure the height and width of the inside of your frame. Just like when you cut wood or fabric, measure twice and cut once. Trust me from experience. LOL! 😉
Once you have your measurements, cut your paper to size. I like to use my rotary cutter and cutting mat with a big ruler. It allows for a straight cut every time.
Attach paper to sign
Before you attach the cut scrapbook paper to your sign, make sure it fits ok and that you cut it the correct size. If it is all good, just take a couple small peices of tape and roll them over. Stick them to either the top and bottom or opposing sides.
The less tape the better, so you can easily get it out to change it up next time you upcycle the sign! Now just fit the paper in the frame and press it down to smooth it out.
Admire your new art
That is it! I told you it was super simple!
Have a great long Memorial Day weekend!
