These stockings are one part of our Christmas decor that never changes. We have used them ever since we were married and our collection grew as we had kids. They are all made from the same knitting pattern as Mr. Wonderful’s childhood stocking. In fact, the stocking all the way to the left is his original stocking from growing up. I have removed or blurred the names on the stockings for privacy, except for mine of course.
You can tell apart the older stockings as the red and green look a little more faded on them. In fact, on Mr. W’s stocking, the red almost looks orange. But I love that fact! It means that these stockings have seen so many happy memories of Christmas mornings and have been stretched to the limit with gifts over and over. I also love knowing that our kids will take theirs with them when they have their own families and hopefully continue on with this tradition. 🙂
Mr. Wonderful’s, mine and our oldest son’s stockings were all made by Mr. W’s grandmother. Unfortunately as she got older, she was not able to knit anymore. She knew that I had done some knitting, so she passed on all of her knitting supplies to me. When I say I have done some knitting, it was something easy, like a scarf. Ha! I did not have enough knowledge of knitting to attempt making some stockings for our younger boys. Maybe someday… but luckily we knew someone who could do it. 🙂
My sister in law is a wonderful knitter, so we commissioned her to make three more stockings for us. They turned out wonderful and it is so nice to have the same stockings for everyone in the family! We had her make them in the opposite colors of the ones we had already. That way they are all a little different but still go together.
You can choose whatever color combinations you want for the stockings. You can also make them with or without names. The pattern does not include names but they are easy enough to add. Here is a closeup of my stocking. You can see how the letters are formed.
Another nice thing about these stockings is that they stretch! 🙂 So if Santa needs to get an unusual sized item in there, it fits! And he can fill it with a lot of stuff!
Unfortunately we don’t have a fireplace, so they reside on our stairwell railing. I think these would look so cute hanging from a mantel! If you like these stockings and want to make some for your own family, I have included the pattern HERE. I am not sure where Mr. Wonderful’s grandmother got it originally as that was many years ago, but I am sure she wouldn’t mind me passing it on. I hope your family can get as much joy out of them as our family has!
Since this is the last day of our 12 days of Christmas series, I will be taking a little time off to enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation. And most importantly to spend some of that precious family time! 🙂 Merry Christmas from our family to yours! See you in the new year!

I think it is so special to have the stockings made by Mr. Wonderful’s grandmother. I love how the old and new blend and will become family heirlooms.

Thanks Debra! I love it too! 🙂
How wonderful to have hand knit stockings made by his grandmother and that your sister-in-law was able to make coordinating ones for you to complete the set for your family!
Thanks Susan! 🙂
Aw, how sweet that these were made by your husband’s grandmother and then another family member was able to replicate them for your children. They look like they can hold a lot of loot too! Merry Christmas Kimberly!
LOL…yes they can! Merry Christmas Marie!!
That is awesome to have this tradition! I recently helped a friend finish up a needlepoint stocking for the last grandchild who was born after grandma passed!
Awww, that is nice of you! They will love that. It is a nice tradition for sure, I hope our kids continue with it.
