Lollipop Ornaments

Learn how to make these easy and adorable DIY lollipop ornaments to add some sweetness to your Christmas tree this year!

Welcome back to part three of my four-part candy Christmas ornament series! Today we are learning how to make these sweet little lollipop ornaments. They will be a favorite of the whole family!

If you saw the tutorial for the candy cane ornaments, then these lollipop ornaments will feel familiar to you. They are partly made in the same way, but with some differences at the end. 😉 These ornaments are not harder to make, however they do require the use of hot glue and take longer to make each one than the candy canes did.

I love how much they look like real lollipops! I always wonder about these kind of candy suckers though, does anyone ever really eat one of these and finish it? LOL! They are so big! I am not a sweets person so I would not be able to! I know when our kids would have one, they would get tired of it after a while and not finish it. Maybe the look entices everyone and draws them in! They are certainly cute to make as ornaments!

Supplies to make lollipop ornaments

Cut some dowels and rope

First, you will have to get a couple things ready to make the lollipops. The lollipop sticks have to be cut down. The wood dowels I got were 12″ long, which were too long. Using a small hack saw, I cut them into 4.5″ sticks for each lollipop. I just measured out marks and cut on the mark.

You will also have to cut the rope into lengths of 27 inches.

How to make lollipop ornaments

Just like how we started the candy canes, place the end of the red and cream threads together running parallel to the rope, about an inch long. Start wrapping around the tail end of the threads securing them down. When you have wrapped about 1/2″ down, cut the ends of the tail sticking out from under the wrapped thread.

When you are wrapping, turn the rope instead of wrapping the thread around the rope. This will eliminate your red and white threads from getting tangled up with each other or wrapping around each other. Hold the rope taut as you are wrapping to ensure the red and cream threads don’t cross over each other. You want to keep the red and white striped pattern along the whole length.

Continue wrapping the rope with the red and cream thread. This is where is takes a little while. I watched a show on my phone while doing this to pass the time. It is best to watch something that doesn’t require your full attention, as you will be mostly listening rather than watching. 😉 Another great option would be to listen to an audiobook!

How to finish the rope

When you get to the end of the rope, cut off the threads leaving yourself about a 3″ tail. Thread these through a large eye embroidery needle.

Push the embroidery needle down through the wrapped thread and pull out the thread ends. Pull them tight to secure them under the band of striped threads. Cut the remaining ends of the threads.

Trim the end of the rope close to the wrapped threads as this will be seen on the end product. You want it to look as nice and clean as possible.

Roll into lollipop shape

To make the lollipop shape, start rolling the wrapped rope into itself. Try to get the center nice and tightly rolled. Glue it down to secure the center.

Add a thin strip of hot glue onto the rope that you will be rolling up. Make sure the glue is towards the back side of the rope so it doesn’t show through on the front of the lollipop ornament. We don’t really care what the backside looks like but want the front looking great! 😉

Continue to add hot glue and tightly roll the rest of the length of rope.

Here is the finished lollipop.

Add accessories to lollipop ornament

There will clearly be a backside to the ornament. You will be able to see the hot glue on that side. Glue down a 4.5″ wooden dowel onto the bottom half of the back of the lollipop.

Next, I added a bow out of twine to the lollipop. You can use any kind of ribbon or twine that you want but I like the natural twine look. Make a simple bow with the twine and cut the end so it is equal to the other side.

Add a dab of hot glue onto the center of the back of the bow and glue it to the stick right under the lollipop.

Lastly, we need to add a thread to hang the ornament from. Thread the embroidery needle with some red thread and run it under two strands on the top of the lollipop. Cut the thread and tie a knot.

Display your ornaments

I am sure these lollipop ornaments will be a hit with everyone in the family, especially the kids! They could help you make these with the rolling part although you may have to do the hot glue portion. I made mine in red and white but these would be pretty in any color! They would really be cute on a pastel tree with candy colors like pink, light blue and mint green!
