Hold on to your hat because this week will be a whirlwind! I will be sharing a four-part series on DIY macrame Christmas ornaments! We are starting with these super cute macrame wrapped wood ring snowflake ornaments.
I have always been interested in macrame, and thought that making ornaments would be a great way to try it out! It is so fun, definitely something I want to delve into further. In fact, I also have a Christmas macrame wall hanging coming up soon. I may have went a little macrame crazy this year! 😉
DIY macrame ornaments
I know some of you may be intimidated by macrame knots but no worries because I am sharing DIY macrame ornaments for all skill levels. And who knows, some of you who lived through the 1970’s are probably already macrame experts! 🙂
In my four-part series, we will be starting with the easiest ornament, this macrame wrapped wood ring snowflake ornament. There are no knots involved in the making of this macrame ornament DIY. Also, I am a little proud to say that I came up with this one myself. 🙂
This week in my four-part macrame Christmas ornaments series, in addition to this ornament, I will also be sharing:
- Macrame Christmas wreath ornament
- DIY macrame Christmas tree ornament
- DIY macrame snowflake ornament
So make sure you stay tuned for those! They will go in order of easiest to hardest, but really none of them are too hard.

How to make macrame Christmas ornaments
Don’t want to read all the instructions? I have included a video in this post showing you how to make this wood ring snowflake ornament. If you can’t see the video, turn off your ad blocker. If you want more detailed instructions, continue reading.
Cut the macrame cord to a length of 40 inches. Hot glue one end of the macrame cord to the ring, but leave just a bit of the end overhanging not glued down. This way, you can trim the end back so you will not be able to see it from the front of the ornament. Make sure all the loose threads on the end are secured with hot glue.
Start wrapping the macrame cord around the ring. There is no need to glue as you go.
Wrap until you get to the end of the macrame cord. You will have the bottom two thirds of the ring filled. Make sure to end the cord on the same side that you glued the first end to initially.
Glue this end down as well, securing all the loose threads.
Add the snowflake to the ornament
Next, you will be gluing the snowflake onto the macrame cord. Only add hot glue to the bottom two “spokes” of the snowflake. This will allow the snowflake to stand up above the ring. Make sure the snowflake is centered before you press it down. They are a little hard to get off to reposition if you need to, and it ruins the thin wood snowflake if you have to take it off. I learned that from experience. 😉
Next cut a 9 inch piece of cream colored embroidery thread.
Loop the embroidery thread on the ring and string on a bead. Because the bead will be able to come off of the thread, I hot glued it down to the ring to secure it. Lastly tie a knot at the top of the embroidery thread.
Make lots of macrame Christmas ornaments
With all the different snowflakes in this pack, you can make lots of different ornaments!
What do you think? Didn’t I tell you it was easy? 🙂 I will be back tomorrow with the next installment of our macrame Christmas ornament series. See you then!

What size are the wood rings and snowflakes and where did you purchase them

Hi Deborah! If you look at the supplies list in the blog post, you will find links to the products I used. Have a great day!
This is so beautiful!!
Thanks for sharing the supplies list. Most of the items are not available, but we’ll keep looking.
Love this!!! Are the snowflakes painted?
Thanks Jennifer! No, they are just wood.
I cannot figure out which ring size you used. The Amazon product shows a 2.4in and 2.8in, complete diameter, ring. However, your note says 2&5/8in, which should be a 2.625in, complete diameter. Could you tell me if you used the 2.4 or the 2.8in sized ring or another size altogether?
Thanks!
Hello! I remember that being a bit confusing too as the sizes did not quite match what was on the Amazon site. These are the exact rings I used and I measured the ring I used, which was the LARGEST ring for these ornaments with the snowflakes, and it measured 2 5/8 in so I thought I would include that measurement in case someone got rings elsewhere. Hope this helps!
Where can we buy supplies needed. I live in a small town and it is limited to say it nicely
Hi Sue! I have included links in the post to the needed supplies. You should be able to order everything you need online. 🙂
Hi,
How many ornaments does the 40in macrame cord make?
Hi Lizzy! The 40 inches is just for one ornament.
These are so pretty. I made some using natural colored jute because I had it on hand. So they’re are more rustic. They are fun to make. Thanks for the inspiration! I
You are so welcome Gayle! Your version sounds amazing! That would be perfect for a more rustic tree. Merry Christmas!
Love these. I make a Christmas ornament for my coworkers every year. I just made 92 of these ornaments. I live the simplicity and the neutral color. Thanks for sharing your idea.
Wow! That is ambitious! You rock! You are very welcome, Wanda. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
