It is really starting to feel like fall here lately and while I love fall, I am not excited for what comes after that! Winter!! 🙁 Oh well, I will enjoy this season while we have it. I did some fall decorating around the house and wanted to share my fall mantel with you today. There were lots of pumpkins involved in my decorating this year, so I dubbed it the pumpkins galore fall mantel! 😉
I wanted to make a cute backdrop for the mantel this year and was inspired by the hanging flower backdrops I have seen on Pinterest. They are mainly used for photo sessions and weddings but I loved the idea of them and thought why not try it with pumpkins instead of flowers? I think it makes a cute background for the mantel!
I found this stick in the yard and it was the perfect size to fit across this window. Mr. Wonderful fashioned up some hooks from wire hangers to hang the stick on. He drilled a couple small holes into the top of the window and bent the hanger at a right angle. The ends have a curve to them to cradle the stick. You can’t see the hangers too well as they are intentionally hidden by some of the ribbon.
I used some different types of ribbon, yarn, jute string and fabric to hang the pumpkins from. They are either just tied onto the branch at the top or hot glued on. Then I just tied them to the pumpkins stems. I think using the different items to hang the pumpkins gives the backdrop a shabby chic look.
I also hung the pumpkins at varying heights to give some interest. The overall shape of the hanging pumpkins are in a triangle because triangles are pleasing to the eye in decorating. The stacked pumpkins sitting on the mantel help to fill in the open spaces on each side nicely.
I used different faux pumpkins as opposed to real pumpkins so they would not be too heavy for hanging. This also allowed me to use some fun colors and fabric. The colors were decided when I found this cute green gingham fabric remnant at the thrift store.
I made some fabric pumpkins from it and was even able to make a slip on pillow cover too! I will be sharing the fabric pumpkin tutorial soon. They were simple to make and so adorable! 🙂 I added some other greens and neutrals to the mix with pops of orange. I LOVE the color combo of this mantel!
Actually, I will be sharing a 3 part pumpkin decorating tutorial soon. In addition to making the fabric pumpkins, most of the green pumpkins were all painted so I will be sharing how I did that as well. Then to finish it off, I will share how I made this super cute yarn pumpkin. That tutorial will even include a VIDEO! Not gonna lie, I am a little nervous about doing video. Gulp! It is a little out of my comfort zone, but I am also excited at the same time! 🙂
I decorated this little coffee table vignette to go along with the mantel.
I love decorating with vignettes! They are such an easy way to add some decor if you don’t want to do too much decorating. Just throw some different items in a tray and you are done! I used a tobacco basket for a tray this time. It works wonderfully!
The little green mini pumpkin was orange to begin with and I painted it as well. Yes, you can paint real pumpkins too!! 🙂
These wooden beads have been used plenty of times before on my mantel to hang banners from but the beads also work great as simple decor to add to a vignette!
I am a sucker for coordinating things! I love how the mantel coordinates with the pillows and the vignette. Just check out this post if you don’t believe me! Ha!
You may remember this DIY interchangeable farmhouse sign I shared recently. I used it on my fall mantel last year too but the size fit so perfectly I decided to use it again. It sounds like I need to make another fall saying for the future!
I hope you liked my pumpkins galore fall mantel! I will be back soon with those pumpkin tutorials! Have a wonderful day!
