Learn how to make this cute color block shamrock pillow for St. Patrick’s Day! It is fun and easy to make, and uses supplies you may already have on hand!
Hey friends!! Where did February go?! Holy moly, I have been working on some fun St. Patrick’s day crafts and next thing I know, it is already March. Yikes!! Well, I will have some great posts coming out in the next couple weeks, including this adorable color block shamrock pillow. Isn’t she a beauty?
Truth be told, I started making this pillow 4 years ago! Ha! I think I ran out of time for getting it up that year for St. Patty’s day so it went into the stash of uncompleted sewing projects. We all have those, right? #fingerscrosseditsnotjustme
This project is really very simple to make and it is a great way to use up some of your yarn supplies! The yarns that I used for this pillow project were all ones that I had on hand! I also used some leftover burlap from a previous project for weaving the yarn onto. I love weaving projects! It is so satisfying for some reason. They are like therapy for me. LOL
If decorating for St. Patrick’s Day is not your thing, you can still use this technique to make a pillow for anything. In fact, check out this heart woven burlap pillow I made previously to this one. So, it is essentially a rinse and repeat project, although I used different colors of yarn for a color block effect on this yarn weaved shamrock pillow.
Since it was basically made in the same way, I will not be going into a lot of detail in the instructions on sewing it together. Y’all can just follow the heart tutorial for that. π

How to weave a shamrock with yarn
The first thing you will want to do is to cut a 21″ square piece of the burlap. This will be what you weave the shamrock onto. Find something to use as a shamrock template to trace onto the burlap. I used a wood shamrock that I got from Hobby Lobby about the time I started making this. It was also the same one I used for my book page shamrock and wood shim shamrock projects. I don’t believe that they carry the exact one anymore but I am sure you can find something similar. For reference, my shamrock is about 14.5″ in both height and width. If all else fails, you can use some free clip art of a shamrock and enlarge it. π
Measure out and mark where your color blocks are going to go. I measured out 4 different sections of about the same height and made a pencil line next to the yardstick. When I hit this mark, then I knew it was time to switch my yarn color.
Starting at the bottom corner, I used the darkest green yarn and started to weave it back and forth across the shamrock. I would skip over two strands of the burlap each time, using an over two under one pattern. Then with each subsequent line, I would stagger the strands that I weaved over. Pull through a bunch of yarn to work with and when you get to the end, leave a little tail on the backside and tie that off to the next piece of yarn and keep going.
Stay within the traced image on each side. Sometimes the edges of the shamrock would require only going over one strand and sometimes it required going over three strands, depending on where it ended at. To make the project move along quicker, I would rock my needle back and forth several times then pull the yarn through. The tighter the weave, the longer it takes, but the end result is stunning and so worth it! π
How to sew the shamrock pillow together
I already have several tutorials for sewing pillow covers so this is where I am going to refer you to the instructions on this woven heart pillow tutorial. I used the same exact process to sew this shamrock pillow cover.
What do you think of this project? Is it something you would tackle? I love the woven look of the shamrock and with the different shades of green, it goes with a lot of St. Patrick’s Day decor. Although you don’t have to use different colors, you could make it all in one green shade of yarn and it would still look fabulous!
I will be back soon with my St. Patrick’s day mantel decor and then with a DIY St. Patrick’s Day garland to share with you. I realize it is really close to the day so you may not be making these projects this year, but don’t forget to Pin this for later! Chat soon!
This color block shamrock pillow tutorial is a delightful find! Your detailed instructions make it seem not only fun but also quite manageable, even for someone with minimal crafting experience. I love how you repurposed yarn and burlap, turning them into a charming St. Patrick’s Day decoration. The color block effect adds a modern touch, making it a versatile piece that could fit into various decor styles. Thanks for sharing this creative and eco-friendly project β definitely inspired to give it a try! ππ¨β¨
