Looking for an elegant and classic way to decorate for Christmas this year? Well I’ve heard that everyone wishes for silver and gold. This silver and gold Christmas tree will definitely meet the requirements!
I must have been on a traditional Christmas kick this year because my candy Christmas tree is decorated in reds and white and this one is a silver and gold Christmas tree. You can’t get more classic Christmas than those color combinations, can you?
The inspiration for this silver and gold Christmas tree came from some Christmas lights we saw at Disney Springs. If you have ever been there, you may have seen the trees decorated with lights that are warm white (that don’t flash) but also have flashing cool white lights at the same time. They look so lovely and always remind me of silver and gold.
So I decided to recreate that look on my own tree. Now, normally I am not a cool light person at all. For all of our house lighting, I like a mid level color temperature of light, like 3500K, not too cool and not too warm. On Christmas trees, I tend to go even warmer because it looks better to me. In fact, I absolutely can’t stand blue lights on a Christmas tree. That is just unnatural! Ha!
This particular tree already has stationary warm lights on it so I just added some strands of twinkling cool lights to recreate the look. When I got these cool lights on the tree, guess what? They looked blue at times!! Ugh! I was not super happy about it but I stuck with them because I wanted the same lighting as the Disney trees. I really like how it looks, minus the blue tint.
Lighting makes all the difference
I was afraid that my pictures were going to look blue and gold instead of silver and gold! Ha! I figured I would have to edit them all to make the lights look silver and gold. However, when I was taking the pictures, I made a happy discovery. When I take pictures, I turn off all artificial lighting and use only natural light. Well, guess what was making the lights on the tree look blue?!
You got it! The artificial lights must be warm enough that they make the cool lights look even cooler! For reference, here is a picture with the lights on.
Isn’t that crazy?! I know, some of you may be like, duh! LOL! But I was absolutely flabbergasted! Not to mention, very pleasantly surprised too. Now I just never turn the lights on in the dining room. π It is crazy how much lighting affects how things look, isn’t it? It also plays a huge part in why some pictures turn out better than others in photography too. Anyway, back to the Christmas tree that now looks stunning in my own humble opinion!!
Make your own Christmas tree decor
I told you in my last post that I have a quick and easy craft to share with you from this Christmas tree. If you haven’t guessed already, it is these free printable Merry Christmas banners! Aren’t they so cute?
They are super easy to make and the best part is they are free! All you need is regular paper, a printer and some glitter and glue. Couldn’t be simpler. Although when I showed them to my third son, he said, “They look like they are made out of paper, you should have made them out of ribbon.” LOL!! Thanks buddy! Trying to make a simple craft that everyone can recreate here and not sure how to print on ribbon but I’ll get right on that. π
I think they look fantastic! Especially with the glitter on the edges. I’ll be sharing that printable and short tutorial with you soon. Luckily I already had all of the other silver and gold decorations and ornaments. Like these pretty crystal ornaments and Eucalyptus stems.
Silver and gold table decor
As usual, I decorated our dining table and buffet table to coordinate with the Christmas tree.
On the buffet table, I made some art for the focal piece. If you saw my Halloween ghost decor post, you may remember that I made some art for the mantel. Well, I thought I could do something for Christmas too instead of buying an art piece.
The white felt cone Christmas trees on either side of the mantel were a project that I made when I first started blogging. I have been able to reuse them lots of times over the years, they have held up really well as you can see. So I decided to make something that coordinated with those and I still had some white felt leftover. While my MIL was here, she was nice enough to cut out a bunch of the leaves for me while I worked on blog posts. π For the trees, I just cut out some different sized triangles from poster board and covered them with the felt leaves.
I added some glitter to the edges of some leaves and the star. I wasn’t sure how many of the leaves I should do and Mr. Wonderful suggested I use the extra leaves to temporarily place some to see where I liked them. This evolved into me gluing those temporary leaves right on top of the ones below as it gave more dimension to the trees. It turned out great! I made some stems from twigs and also put the smaller trees on some small blocks to make them stick out a little more from the center tree.
After it was made, I was told by multiple members of the family how I should have made the center tree pop out instead of the other two and how I should have put the center tree up higher because the trees don’t line up at the bottom! Sheesh! A bunch of critics this year, I tell ya! LOL! I guess I better ask all their opinions first before making projects in the future. π
On one side of the buffet table, I added some wintery stems in a vase.
On the other side is a lantern with small gold and silver ornaments and some snowy pinecones.
Next to those items on each side are the white cones trees I mentioned earlier along with some gold and silver mercury trees to go with the silver and gold Christmas tree theme.
Candles for the win
In front of the Christmas tree art, I added some gold candlesticks. Here they are lit. So pretty!!
The lit candles really show the dimension on the Christmas trees with all the shadows. I love it!
Silver and gold accessories
Around the rest of the room were some more silver and gold accessories thrown in. On the table, I put extra gold and silver ornaments into our DIY dough bowl.
On the window ledge, I added some gold and silver pillows with a fun disco ball. π Did you notice the matching disco ball ornaments on the tree? They are really beautiful when the light hits them!
On the other side of the window ledge is my three tiered tray decorated simple for Christmas. It doesn’t look too wintery outside though, does it? Ha! I honestly love that! I’ve had enough winter to last a lifetime.
I will be back soon with that Merry Christmas banner tutorial to close out my Christmas content this year! Chat soon friends!
