Bring the outdoors inside this spring with this lovely mantel decorated with birds! Lots of farmhouse touches with DIY bird scrolls, a nest with eggs, a birdcage and chippy candle holders. All you are missing is the chirping of actual birds!
Spring has sprung and I couldn’t be happier! This is such a great time of year when the weather starts warming up, trees get buds on them, plants start blooming and the most noticeable is the return of all the birds! I thought what could be a better mantel for spring than one that is themed around birds. I love how this spring farmhouse bird mantel turned out, hopefully you will too. 🙂
The obvious pièces de résistance of the whole mantel are these DIY fabric printed bird scrolls. I thought it would be fun to make up some art that looked like scrolls and this was the perfect mantel to try it on to showcase some birds. I will be sharing the tutorial for the scrolls later in the week but I couldn’t wait to show you how the mantel turned out first.
Truth be told, this mantel was decorated last spring before we sold our house of 15 years. I just didn’t have time to post it while getting ready to sell. After just getting done moving again (cross country this time!) to our second rental within a year and literally still unpacking, I did not want to style a new mantel so I just recreated this same mantel here. I had stored the scrolls by rolling them up and lightly securing them with a rubber band. They stored amazingly! They look exactly like they did when we made them. I love that I can use them again with no problems!
The birds were printed onto fabric with a laser printer. I was not sure that was going to work, although I am glad it did. I really like how they look a little faded. This is not a method you would want to try if you were wanting to get bright colors. However, for my farmhouse style mantel, this was perfect.
I added some other farmhouse elements to the mantel like these crocks. I found the big crock at an antique store several years ago. That sucker is heavy! I wasn’t sure if the mantel would hold it, but it held up like a champ. I shouldn’t have doubted it, I know how well Mr. Wonderful builds things. 😉
I added some wispy branches to the big crock that I found at Hobby Lobby. I love how they look like new budding tree branches. Perfect for a spring mantel, right?
Of course, you can’t have a bird themed mantel without a nest! How precious is this nest with these tiny eggs?
I added a birdcage to the mantel but did not have any birds to put into it. Plus, I thought more birds might be overkill, so I just added some sprigs of faux lamb’s ear to tie in with the plant in the small crock. It looks great ‘nesting’ against some vintage books. I love these books, I use them all over in my decorating.
They are a super easy DIY project too. Just find some old books at a second hand store and rip off the covers. I know, gasp! It may seem sacrilegious to some to destroy books, but if they were donated in the first place, I feel I am just giving them a second life, only without a cover. Ha! Then just group some together and tie with twine. Very cute!!
These big distressed candlestick holders are one of my favorite items to decorate with. I love the way they look and they mingle harmoniously with the other farmhouse pieces on the mantel. I do not use real candles very often so these are just faux candles. Betcha couldn’t tell, could you? They are great replicas.
Not only do you get to see this great spring farmhouse bird mantel, but I have some exciting news to share with you as well! With our most recent move, I am focusing on full time blogging. So you will be hearing from me a lot more! Yay!
Just like this post, I have lots others that I did not get time to share over the past year with all the moving going on. So some of the content I will be sharing for a while is going to based on our previous home. There will be posts on home décor and others on home improvements we made over the years.
But don’t worry! I also plan to share more crafts, décor and recipes from our new location. Sunny Florida!! 🙂 Oh yeah, you may eventually be seeing more Disney stuff too. Imagine that! Ha! Have a wonderful day!
