Are you looking for some fun Christmas ornaments to add a little pizzazz to your tree this year! Learn how to make these easy DIY tassel ornaments and bring your tree to the next level!
Hey y’all! I am back today with a simple Christmas craft to share. These fun tassel ornaments are so easy to make and you can literally make them in any color to go with your Christmas decor! I chose jewel tones to coordinate with one of my Christmas trees this year, which I will be sharing soon!
Not only are these easy and fun, but they are fairly inexpensive to make! I don’t know if you have priced ornaments at the store lately but sheesh! Unless you are buying only the plastic, round ornaments, they are a little spendy! Plus, you need several of them, it is not like you put only one ornament on the tree! I actually had all the materials on hand from previous crafts, so for me these tassel ornaments were free! 🙂
I love to DIY ornaments to add to my trees, not only because they are less expensive and I enjoy crafting, but it is a way that I can customize my trees. These jewel tone tassel ornaments work perfectly on my jewel toned Christmas tree this year. Not only was I able to match the colors to my tree very well, but I feel like they fit in perfectly with the theme.

- Embroidery floss in colors of your choice, each ornament uses one skein of embroidery floss
- Wood rings – I used the smallest rings from this pack
- Wood beads – I had some beads on hand already
- Gold cord/ribbon
- Beads – I already had some on hand but these or these are similar
- Scissors
- Gold Acrylic Paint (Optional)
- Foam Brush
Paint the wood beads and rings
This is a totally optional step. I opted to paint mine because it coordinated with my colors better and also my wood rings and beads were different shades as you can see in the picture above. However, if you like the wood tone, leave them as they are! I used some metallic gold acrylic paint and a foam brush to paint them. The wood rings were easy enough to hold onto and paint around my fingers. I let them dry, then came back to paint the rest later.
For the wood beads, I used a hack I have shared before. Put the bead on a bamboo skewer to hold it. This makes it so much easier instead of trying to hold the bead and paint it at the same time. I used one wood ring and one wood bead per ornament.

How to make tassel ornaments
You will need some cardboard or card stock of some sort to wrap the embroidery floss around to make the tassel. I just used a thank you card that I had around since it looked to be about the right size. The thank you card I used was 3.75″ x 5.25″.
In the pictures below (and in the video), I wrapped the embroidery floss around the long side of the thank you card, however after hanging one on my tree, I decided they were too long for my taste. So I made the rest running around the short side of the thank you card. All of the end product pictures show the shorter tassels. You can make them either way, depending on if you want them longer or shorter. The shorter ones also have a fuller look to them, which I also liked better.
Each ornament uses one skein of embroidery floss. Unravel the skein completely first so that you don’t run into any knots along the way as you are wrapping it around the thank you card. Hold the end of the embroidery floss against the card and start wrapping it around the card. Try not to wrap too tightly or it will start bending the card.
After you are done wrapping the whole skein of floss around the card, slightly bend the card to slide the floss loop off. Make sure to keep the loop intact while you are taking it off.
Holding the loop taut, cut one end of the loop with sharp scissors.
Pull out and set aside one individual strand from the bunch. Take the bunch and stick one end into one of the wooden rings until the strands are centered on the ring. Take the individual strand and tie it around the bunch directly beneath the wood ring.
To form the tassel, wrap the individual strand ends around the embroidery floss bunch going in opposing directions. You meet back up in the back, where you can tie it off in a knot. Cut off the ends.
Trim any uneven ends of the tassel with sharp scissors.
Add beads to your tassel ornament
Cut a length of gold cord to hang your DIY tassel ornament from, maybe about 10 inches. For more visual appeal, I added some amber, gold and brown colored beads to the tassel ornaments. You can just use several wood beads if you prefer, but I like the look of the beads. Plus, they tie into some other ornaments on my tree, so it worked out well. 😉
Add the gold cord onto the wood ring, making sure the ends are equal. String one a smaller bead first onto both ends of the gold cord, followed by a wood bead and ending with another small bead. Tie a knot on top of the last bead so they stay in place. Then tie off the end of the gold cord to make a loop to hang the ornament from.
That’s it! Now you have a cute tassel ornament that you have made yourself! Just repeat this process to make some more and cover your tree with them. 🙂
As I said before, the tassel above is an example of a longer one, whereas below are the shorter tassels.
I will be back soon to share another great Christmas craft with you, then both my trees and decor! Chat soon!
