Hey everybody!! Is it freezing where you are too? Lots of staying indoors happening around here! Oh well, that makes it the perfect time to do a little decorating. 🙂 Last week I shared a simple valentine’s day wreath and promised I would share my mantel with you, which I will be doing soon. In the meantime, I was styling a vignette for our coffee table to go along with the mantel and I thought it might be a good idea to share some tips on how to style a Valentine’s Day vignette with you.
I had previously written a post about styling Easter vignettes and it remains one of my most popular posts, so I figured why not recreate it for Valentine’s Day. So today I am going to share with you how to create an Valentine’s Day vignette showing you different examples of others who have made stunning vignettes. You may be saying to yourself, “That sounds great, but what is a vignette?” Honestly when I first heard the term I was not sure what it meant either, I just knew that I loved the look of them. 🙂 Very simply, a vignette is a group of objects that are placed together to create a pleasing focal point. For example, if you decorate on top of your entryway table, that is a vignette. Most times there will be some sort of theme with it, in this instance our theme is Valentine’s Day.
Where to put it?
I know a lot of people do not excessively decorate for Valentine’s Day and that is what is nice about vignettes. They allow you to decorate for a holiday or season without having to decorate your whole house. It is super easy (and easier on the wallet) to decorate a small area, so this is something anyone could do. If you are wondering where you can put a vignette, it can literally be anywhere, in any room of your house. I will help you out with some more specific ideas though!
A great place for a vignette is on your dining room table. If you decorate the whole table it would be considered a tablescape, but it is much easier just to add a vignette! Add a table runner and create your vignette to use as a centerpiece like in this example.

Going along with the dining room theme, a hutch is a perfect place to add a little Valentine’s decor. I could not find a source for this example but had to include it because it is decorated so beautifully!

How about in your kitchen? As we don’t normally decorate in our kitchen, a vignette would be a fun and easy way to add a little festiveness there. You could even include dishes in your kitchen vignette to tie it all together!

Another good idea for the kitchen (or anywhere really) is to use a three tiered tray like these. It would look great sitting on an island or on your counter, and not take up too much counter space. 🙂

Your coffee table is another fantastic place to create a vignette. This is easily a place where you could have a vignette all year round. Here is a pretty neutral colored Valentine’s Day themed one…

What to include in the vignette?
Realistically you can decorate with anything you want in the vignette. Since the most associated colors with Valentine’s Day are red and pink, start there. Shop your own house, finding items around that feel like they convey love (awwww). You can even use general items from your red Christmas decor, they can work double duty which is great! However, as we saw above you don’t have to use red and pink, neutral decor works well too! Below are some examples of common items used in Valentine’s Day vignettes.

Glassware is great to use in vignettes. The next several examples all use some sort of glassware in them. When I say glassware, I don’t mean drinking glasses more like jars, bottles and vases. The thing that I love about glassware is that it is so versatile, you can switch out the decor in/underneath it depending on what you are decorating for. I have several different glassware pieces that are staples in my decorating.
A cloche (or glass bell jar) is a great addition to a vignette. It doesn’t matter what you decorate with, it always looks better with a cloche over it. 🙂 Well that is my opinion anyway. Obviously they are not very big in size, so whatever you put in it has to be smaller and more intricate. I think that the cloche helps to highlight the details in the smaller items. If you are wanting to purchase one, I am loving these cloches here, here & here. How cute are these little love notes in this first cloche?

Apothecary jars are other great pieces of glassware to use. You can add literally anything to them to add a little color to your vignette. There are so many different shapes and sizes of apothecary jars to use for all sized spaces. Check out these great apothecary jar sets here, here and here.

Some obvious additions for a Valentine’s Day vignette are hearts and signs/sayings about love. You can’t decorate for Valentine’s Day without including some love! Here are some adorable examples of vignettes with these things. LOVE this picture with the vintage scale and some scrappy hearts. It has my heart! 😉

Other items that are perfect to add for a Valentine’s Day vignette are flowers and candy. After all, those are the most common gifts given for Valentine’s day. Luckily it is easy to find red and pink candy around this time of year. A couple of these examples even incorporate flowers and candy together!

Rae Dunn pottery is all the rage right now and I have seen them used so much in decorating. The sayings on the pieces lend themselves to be used for literally everything! These seem like a common item used in not only Valentine’s Day vignettes, but in vignettes for all seasons and holidays. If you are wanting to buy some, there are some great ones to use for V day like these here, here and here! Here are a couple examples of some cute vignettes using Rae Dunn pottery.

A good way to display all your decorations and bring it all together is to put everything in a tray or basket. This also makes it transportable if you want to move it around to different locations.

How to Style Your Vignette
The best vignettes have items of different sizes and textures. You also want varying heights to give it more dimension. You may have to stack items on books or a cake stand to give them more height. Start with your taller items in the back and move forward, layering as you go. Here are some excellent examples of using layering and varying heights in your vignettes.
