The star of this mantel is not the big star in the background, even though that is really cool too, but it is the Christmas village. For the longest time, I have thought Christmas villages were neat but we did not have a place to put one, they are kinda expensive and to be honest, they were not really my style. However, when I was out looking at some thrift stores for some Christmas decor items, I saw these little village buildings and thought how they would fit into my decor better if they were all white.
I figured it would be pretty easy to paint them and they were fairly inexpensive so I decided to buy them and try it. Also, since they were going on my mantel, I did not need a lot of them. One can of spray paint later and I now have a white Christmas village. π They look so much better, in my opinion!
I am sure there are people out there who think it is blasphemy to paint a Christmas village, just like when we painted our oak cabinets white. π But to that I say, do whatever you like and makes you happy. Whatever fits your style is what is important. If you like the unpainted villages, decorate with those by all means. I am not putting them down, this is just the style that I like better and want to show others new ways to decorate.
While I was at the thrift store, I also found a strand of old outdoor Christmas lights. I knew they would make a cute garland but I wanted to upcycle them. To go with the big rose gold star, I painted some of the bulbs with an acrylic rose gold paint.
For the others, I wrapped them with blush colored yarn using hot glue to attach the yarn. This took a little longer than I thought it would. LOL I was originally going to wrap them all in yarn but decided against it after seeing how long it took. πΒ I actually like the alternating bulbs better anyway.
I just tied the bulbs onto twine and strung them up on the mantel along with a wooden bead garland for some added interest. The wooden bead garland also goes well with the DIY wooden bead feather ornaments I made for my tree.
One one side of the mantel is this cloche with a village building inside of it. So I needed something for the other side with some height as well. I had my mercury glass candlesticks up there but was not sure what to put on them.
Mr. Wonderful came up with the brilliant idea to make a moon and stars to represent the moon and stars over the village. Isn’t it perfect!?
He cut out a wood moon and stars with the band saw and painted them gold to match with the bottle brush trees. We used one of the dusters from my Christmas tree as a cloud. You can see how the dusters look like snow on myΒ Christmas tree from last year.
How about that big rose gold star? Isn’t it cool? I have had it for a while and knew I wanted to use it on a mantel someday. My MIL found it on clearance after Christmas one year at Shopko I believe. However it needed a backdrop. I thought it would look amazing against a shiplap backdrop and Mr. W. said he could totally make one for me. Sweet! He did an awesome job. I will be sharing the tutorial for it soon.
I used a lit up faux garland on the mantel to add some greenery. I did not want a bulky garland or there would be no room for the Christmas village to sit so I used a cheaper garland that was more sparse. To make it look a little nicer and more full, I added some faux eucalyptus garland that I had previously cut into smaller chunks. It is easier to work with that way and you can insert it wherever you need some.
This is actually a two for one post, you also get a vignette! π I threw together this vignette for the coffee table although I am not sold on it. I may change it up still. The big church also came from the thrift store but it was too big for the mantel. It was battery operated and came with fiber optic lights in it. We took the lights out so you can see all the little holes where the lights were. I may cover those with joint compound and repaint the whole thing. We will see how motivated I am. Ha!
The blush colored pillows were made from a $4.96 fleece blanket I found at Walmart! Score! It was the perfect size to get two pillow covers from. Check out this zippered pillow cover tutorial to see how I make my pillow covers. Our youngest son loves them and says they are the softest pillows ever, even if they are pink. Ha!
I hope you like my mantel as much as I do! I can’t wait for you to see the tree as well. Have a wonderful day!

Thanks Katrin! π
The village pieces were a great thrift find and look beautiful! The rose gold Christmas lights garland look so pretty! Love it!
Thanks Jenny! I was so happy with how they turned out. The lights are actually normal colored, but may appear rose gold from the star. π
Kimberly, I LOVE this idea!! Your mantel is so charming and beautiful. I am going to paint our village houses! They will have a whole new lease on life…and be able to be in our holiday decor for some time to come again. Thank you for this inspiration. xo Lidy
Thanks Lidy!! I am so glad that you like this idea and can use it for your village. It is nice to be able to update the things we have to use them again. Have a great week! π
Oh my goodness Kimberly your mantel is stunning – I love everything about it! The star mounted on the shiplap is gorgeous and I love how you tied the rose gold together with the pretty Christmas light garland. No shame in painting a village white. I place my Mother’s Christmas village on my fireplace mantel every year and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve contemplated painting the whole thing white. I love my village and haven’t had the courage to paint it YET.
Awww…thanks Marie! It would be much harder to paint something that was passed down from your Mom. I totally understand that. It was pretty easy doing it with thrift store finds though. LOL Maybe you just need to find a couple at a thrift store to paint and keep your Mom’s original. π
This mantel is gorgeous, I wanted to do a white village this year, but have to wait for after Christmas sales to get the buildings. You have definitely inspired me, I love yours. Pinning.
Thanks Leanna! Check out your local thrift stores, you may find some there! π
Ohhh I am loving the copper! It’s so unexpected but it works perfectly with the rest of your decor. Absolutely beautiful!
Best,
Kelly
Thanks Kelly! I loved the pairing of the colors too!
I love your Christmas mantel! Painting the thrift store village was a great idea, and I love all of the rose gold and pink. So pretty π
Thanks Wanda! I never thought I would be using pink in my Christmas decor but never say never. I am loving it. Ha! π
I love how you painted the houses, they look wonderful. And what a great idea to upcycle the outdoor lights. The whole vignette looks beautiful.
Thanks so much Debra! It is so fun to find things to upcycle, isn’t it?
There is just so much to love about that mantel. I love every little detail. And I love that you took thrift store finds and gave them awesome new lives..
Thanks so much Susan! I love to give items a new lease on life. There is something so gratifying in it. π
It’s beautiful! I have had a village for about 25 years, and it looks similar to yours. I was kind of over the village thing, but this year I also decided to paint mine white, and I fell in love with it all over again!
Isn’t that great?! I love giving old things new life. Have a Merry Christmas Cherryl!
