Have you gotten all your Christmas decor down yet? I tackled that big job this last weekend. It is always crazy to see how bare things look after the decorations are all gone! However, I did not take everything down as some of it works for winter decor too! So today I wanted to share some easy ideas on how to transition to winter decor after Christmas.
This year I was much better in how I put my Christmas decor away. Like actually going through and purging things we don’t use anymore and organizing all my decor by colors. That will make a huge difference next year when I am looking for something in particular. I don’t know why I didn’t do that a long time ago! Actually I do…laziness! Ha!
I understand that some of you don’t live in a wintry climate or may want to just have wipe the slate clean after Christmas and that is fine too, this may not apply to you. But for those of us who live in frozen tundras, this decor will work for a lot longer! π
The easiest way to transition to winter decor after Christmas is to simply take away all the red! Ok, maybe not that simple. Obviously also take away the ornaments and anything that says Merry Christmas or has Santas, reindeer, elves etc. on it too. π But, you can leave up all your garland and bare trees (even your Christmas tree if you wish). Think about it this way, when you look outside, what do you see? Evergreens and bare trees, possibly covered in snow, right? So these frosty trees, wreath and garland still work perfectly for winter decor after Christmas!
For instance, to transition over to a winter mantel, I left up the same mantel display as my Mad about Plaid Christmas mantel. I simply changed the fabric on the canvas backdrop pieces to cozier, winter colors and took away all the red berries. That’s it!
In the rest of the room, I changed the pillow covers to match the colors on the mantel and updated my coffee table vignette adding some cone trees, pine cones, candle holders and a plant to match the garland.
I thought about just going neutral with my color scheme using only white and gray with the greenery, but I already had the navy and gray fleece fabric that I used on the mantel. I bought the fabric on clearance several years ago from the Target dollar spot, they are actually pet blankets. Originally I was going to make pillows out of the fabric but I realized they were too small in size for that, so they worked perfectly to use on the mantel backdrop.
I think the navy is a perfect color addition to the wintry feel of the room. At the same time that I found the fabric, I also found this thick navy cording at the Goodwill. It worked awesome to make a cone tree with! I also made a couple more cone trees with some other yarn I had on hand in the white and gray colors. Here is a tutorial for DIY cone trees if you want to make some too! They can work double duty for Christmas and winter decor!
Totally off topic, but we got a couple new additions to our family this Christmas. We adopted a couple kitties from a local shelter. One of them wanted to be part of the decor too as evidence in the picture above! She coordinates perfectly! π They are sisters and because of their coloring and our love of Disney, we named them Elsa and Anna! This is Elsa…
She thought she could help out too, but then was like, “Oops, I’m outta here!” LOL
And this is Anna…
They are the cutest, sweetest, most curious and playful little kitties! They have brought a lot of fun into the house!
Sorry for the interruption, now back to the decor! π I also left up some garland and trees in our entryway. I have been leaving the lights off for the most part, but it is still fun to light them at night! Frosty stems in a vase and twine and white balls in a lantern are other easy ideas for winter decor!
In the dining room, I put together this easy centerpiece using my white DIY cone trees with some mercury glass trees in our DIY dough bowl. I used some evergreen branches and pine cones as filler. This could also work for a Christmas centerpiece but for now it works nicely for my winter decor.
I left the wreaths up on the windows as well. Just changed the ribbon holding them from red to gold! I love these mercury trees! I found them at Target this year. They are so pretty!
I hope you have gotten some good and easy ideas for transitioning your Christmas decor to winter decor! Have a wonderful week and stay warm!

I realize the Minnie Mouse ears were made sometime back but I’m just now seeing. Two things….what gauge wire did you use? I would cover the tops of the ears with beads. Just a little more bling!

Hi Sandy! It was 12 gauge wire. That is a great idea to use beads on the wire for more bling. π That would be cute!
I love the blue! Can I ask where you got the hanging above the mantel shelf?
Thanks Jennie! We actually made the mantel shelf. Maybe one of these days I will get a tutorial put together for it. π
Love this! Thanks for sharing all these ideas!
