Hello and welcome to the 12 Days of Christmas hosted by my friend Shirley from Intelligent Domestications! On this fifth day of Christmas, we are sharing a dollar store craft. I have to be honest, I was a little hesitant about this one. With the dollar store, I feel like you either love it or hate it. I have never been in the ‘love it’ category although I wouldn’t use the word hate either, that is a little harsh.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of items available to choose from for this craft! I made a sparkly gem Christmas tree and it fits in perfectly with my decor! Who knows, between finding this stuff and another dollar store item that I got for my Christmas tree (I will share that with you soon!), I may have to visit the dollar store more often! 🙂
You can find the tutorial below and at the bottom of the post, check out all the other great dollar store craft ideas from the many talented bloggers we have joining us for this blog hop.

This was a really simple project. I love projects that you can finish in under an hour. This was one of those.
*There are links to products in this post that I use or are similar to products I use. If you buy something from one of these links, I may make a small commission (with no additional cost to you) from the purchase. I will not recommend anything that I would not buy myself. Thank you for supporting my blog!
For this project you will need:
- Styrofoam cone
- Clear acrylic gems
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Acrylic paint (color of choice)
- Paintbrush
I already had the green acrylic paint and hot glue gun on hand so all I had to buy at the dollar store were the cone and gems. In case you don’t have a dollar store near you, I linked to some similar supplies. I wanted to paint the Styrofoam cone to match my decor and luckily I had some paint that fit the bill.
After the paint was dry, I started to glue on the gems. I used the point on the gem to make an indent in the cone exactly where I wanted the gem to be placed. I then applied the hot glue at that indentation. Firmly press the gem to the cone and hold it for a few seconds.
Glue the gems on in rows. For each subsequent row, offset the gems by gluing them in between two gems in the row below. Continue until you reach the top.
Because the cone is cut off at the top and does not form a point, I had to make one from the gems. I glued three gems together and they fit perfectly into the space left on the top of the cone.
I think the tree turned out lovely! It looks very elegant and classy! This reminds me of something you would buy at the store.
It works perfectly into my mantel decor. I love how it sparkles in the light as well!
See you tomorrow for the sixth day of Christmas. I hope you are not getting tired of hearing from me! 😉

How pretty! I love finding dollar store items that I can use for crafts. I don’t often find things that I’ll use just as they are, but it’s a great place for inexpensive crafting items.

Thanks Beverly. I am finding that out too! 🙂
So Sparkly you have to love the dollar store when they have craft bit in
Thanks Amber! Yes, I was pleasantly surprised at the selection they had!
Your tree looks great snuggled in with all your other mantel tress. The bling is always nice for the holidays, This idea would be perfect for a young teen or little girls room.
Thanks Leanna! You are right, it would look darling in a girl’s room! 🙂
Very cute, I was bummed our dollar store didn’t have the styrofoam trees this year.
Thanks Emily! That it too bad, maybe next year! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
