These adorable felt stars are not only a win for your patriotic decor, they can used for all sorts of decorating ideas! They are easily made with any color of felt so you can customize them for any theme.
Hey y’all! How is your summer going so far? I know it is just getting started but it has felt like summer around here for a while! We are getting ready for the 4th of July soon and I wanted to share a simple craft that you can make for it. These cute felt stars are sure to add some festiveness to your holiday decor this year!
If you are a subscriber to our newsletter, you may remember these felt hearts around Valentine’s Day. You can make these felt stars in a similar way. In fact, that is how I was originally going to make them, so I have a couple of them that are like that with a contrasting embroidery thread around the star. If you want to make them this way, just follow the tutorial for the felt hearts, they are made in the same exact way.
However, I ultimately decided on a different look for these DIY felt stars. It ended up being a quicker way to make them as well so that was a bonus! I used my sewing machine to sew a blanket stitch around the stars. I really like the finished edge it gives the felt stars.
Again, I was able to just use regular felt sheets for this project. Until I went to look for a navy blue… I could not find the color anywhere. So I ordered a bigger piece of felt off of Amazon. It was a little softer in feel compared to the felt sheets but it still worked fine. Plus, now I have extra for future projects! 🙂

- Felt Sheets in color of your choice – I used the colors burgundy and cream from Hobby Lobby and found this navy felt on Amazon.
- Matching embroidery thread – I already had these on hand, or regular thread if using the sewing machine method.
- Large eye embroidery needle
- Scissors
- Poly-fil
- Jute twine (optional)
- Sewing Machine
- Star template (get below)
Print out the felt star template
The first step is to print out the felt star template onto cardstock. When you are printing, make sure you print this pattern at 100% to make sure the size is correct. Every printer is different so just make sure your settings are not set to ‘fit to page‘ or that the box is not checked letting your printer make changes. I gave you multiple options in sizes for the stars. I used the 4″ size for the burgundy and cream stars and the 4.5″ size for the navy stars.
How to make felt stars
Cut out the star template in the size you want.
Using the star template you just cut out, trace it onto a piece of felt. You will need to trace two stars to make one stuffed felt star. I used a fine tipped marker in a matching color to trace the star. If you don’t have colored markers, you can just use a pen.
Then I cut it out right inside the line so that the outline didn’t show up on the finished star.
Take two stars and stack them on each other.
How to sew felt stars
Grab your sewing machine, add some matching thread and set it to a blanket stitch setting.
Line up the two stacked stars next to the needle and start sewing the blanket stitch around the edges.
Continue sewing until you have about a 1.5″ gap left to sew. Pull the star away from the needle and stuff the opening with Poly-fil stuffing until plump.
Put the star back to the needle and continue sewing the felt star closed until you come to the starting point and backstitch. Here are two completed stars, they look completely seamless, right?
How to make a felt star garland
I ended up using some stars just scattered around in a bowl with some greenery, but the others I made into a felt star garland. To do this, I just threaded some small twine onto a large eyed needle.
Thread the twine through a point of each star arranging them on the twine in whatever order you like.
I used three of each color for my felt star garland and just alternated the colors. I hung my garland on the mantel and will be sharing that with you soon.
My felt hearts were a big hit and I am thinking these felt stars will be as well! Don’t just limit them to the 4th of July though! You could make them for New Years Eve, a graduation, a birthday party or even a wedding! They are so cute and versatile!
I will be back next week to share the rest of my patriotic decor with you all! Chat soon friends!
